The Spotlight: The Lions Of Al-Rassan By Guy Gavriel Kay

Published almost twenty years ago, it’s long past time for me to check this book out; maybe for you, too.

Book CoverThe Lions Of Al-Rassan by Canadian author Guy Gavriel Kay is a book that has been recommended to me on a number of occasions, by several different people, so it has been on my to read list for a while now. I recently got hold of a copy, though it’s likely to be a few weeks before I actually get around to reading it.

The Spotlight: Blood Song By Anthony Ryan

It is time to shine a light upon the self-published phenomenon that went mainstream.

Here’s a quick preview of Blood Song, a title recently added to my to read list, that maybe should be on yours too.

A recent addition to my to read list, Blood Song by Anthony Ryan first came to my attention earlier this year, in the summer, when it was published here in the UK (Thursday 4th July) by Orbit Books. It is the acclaimed first book of the Raven’s Shadow Trilogy, and I was surprised to discover that it was originally self-published by the author before eventually being acquired by Ace Books in North America, and more recently Orbit Books.

I have recently snapped up a copy of Anthony Ryan’s debut novel, and I hope to read and review it before the end of the month.

“Born For Battle Bred For War”

We have fought battles that left more than a hundred corpses on the ground and not a word of it has ever been set down. The Order fights, but often it fights in shadow, without glory or reward. We have no banners.

Vaelin Al Sorna’s life changes forever the day his father abandons him at the gates of the Sixth Order, a secretive military arm of the Faith. Together with his fellow initiates, Vaelin undertakes a brutal training regime – where the price of failure is often death. Under the tutelage of the Order’s masters, he learns how to forge a blade, survive the wilds and kill a man quickly and quietly.

Now his new skills will be put to the test. War is coming. Vaelin is the Sixth Order’s deadliest weapon and the Realm’s only hope. He must draw upon the very essence of his strength and cunning if he is to survive the coming conflict. Yet as the world teeters on the edge of chaos, Vaelin will learn that the truth can cut deeper than any sword.
