The more wonderful the means of communication, the more trivial, tawdry, or depressing its contents seemed to be.

2001: A Space Odyssey

In the public consciousness the novel, 2001: A Space Odyssey, has very much been eclipsed by the movie directed by Stanley Kubrick. Subsequently, many people are unaware that the film is not an adaptation of the book, per se, but rather the author Arthur C. Clarke wrote the novel while concurrently co-writing the screenplay for the film with Kubrick.

Both the novel and the film were released in 1968, and have proved to be hugely influential over the years. Today, love it or hate it, the book should be regarded as required reading for all serious science fiction readers.

Unforgettable quotes of fantasy and science fiction literature. The long and the brief; the funny and the serious; the whimsical and the dramatic.
